Wind, doglegs and water.

In 9Daily, Home tells you what kind of day it is before your first shot: calm, breezy, windy or stormy. Every hole blows around that strength, a little more or a little less, and each hole has its own direction.

The wind box at the top of the 9Daily map shows where the wind blows and how hard, in km/h. Look at it on every hole, not just the first.

In 9Daily the circle on the map shows how far a full shot with your club flies. Into the wind the ball flies clearly shorter, downwind only a little longer, and from the side it drifts. The longer the ball is in the air, the more the wind moves it.

To play the wind in 9Daily, tap further when it is against you, a touch shorter when it is behind you, and to the side it comes from when it blows across.

9Daily works out the wind for every km/h and every 100 metres the ball flies. For a 150 m shot the landing spot moves like this:

A dashed zone on the 9Daily map is a gust. Inside it the wind blows 2.5 times as hard, for every metre the ball flies through it. Fly around it if you can, or hold much more against it if you cannot.

Longer holes in 9Daily often bend as doglegs. The corner sits about a driver away, with a small wood on the inside. Cutting the corner means flying through those trees: the ball always gets through the leaves, but it loses 20 to 50 percent of the distance it had left, and now and then a branch knocks it off line.

The club 9Daily picks for you plays a dogleg with a shorter club onto the fairway. That is usually the better score. On the aim line a small note shows when leaves are in the way and how likely a branch is. New to words like dogleg, carry or rough? See golf terms explained.

Water in 9Daily costs a penalty stroke and a drop. The club picked for you never aims into water and takes the longer club that carries it. If the carry looks too long in a headwind, lay up short of it and play the next shot onto the green.

On 9Daily greens the ball rolls out after it lands: a wedge a few metres, longer clubs further. So land it short of the flag, not on it. Some flags sit close to the edge, on the side of the water or the bunker. Aim for the middle, then let the rings decide: inside the inner ring is one putt, the outer ring two, otherwise three.
